Bound Souls Description

As I said last week, I plan on releasing my next book, Bound Souls, on Tuesday, July 1st. It's a supernatural horror/romance book (or, maybe more appropriately, a supernatural romance/horror book). Today I'd like to share a quick synopsis/description of the novel, which clocks in right around 80,000 words. This is mostly a first draft of the description, but it will likely be pretty close to this when it goes live on Amazon. And, yes, it will only be available on Amazon for the e-book, and Create Space/Amazon for the paperback. That may change in the future, but for now I'm going to take advantage of the Amazon KDP Select program. I'm shooting to reveal the cover next week, but I don't have a definite time-table set for that. Anyway, I hope the description tickles your imagination.

BOUND SOULS

When 36 year old Aaron Welch lost his wife, Jenna, and his infant son, Zach, five years prior, he figured he'd never again find love. So when he falls head-over-heels for 18 year old Hannah Bailey -- at first glance, no less -- he's not quite sure what to make of the situation. She may be half his age, but she feels as perfect as only Jenna ever had, physically and, more importantly, spiritually. Not only does he not understand how this could happen with a girl so young, but after Jenna, how it could happen at all.

To complicate matters further, two ghosts emerge in their lives -- a jealous Jenna and, much more scary and dangerous, an evil presence intent on destroying all three of them. Everything, from Hannah, to Jenna, to the evil entity, baffles Aaron beyond belief until he learns of a person, a soul witch, who very well could hold the answers to not only his intense attraction to Hannah and how to best help Jenna, but also how to destroy the evil entity.

But is it too powerful to be defeated?

Dragon Guard Description

Dragons and the undead only exist in fairy tales and video games. Fifteen year-old Ben Phillips knows this as surely as he knows the sun rises in the morning and sets at night. And then he gets attacked by zombies on his way to school. But that’s not the worst thing that’s happened to him lately. He’s also fallen for the new girl in school, Andi Thomas, who turns out to be a 758 year-old dragon in a fifteen year-old girl's body. If that wasn’t enough to make it the worst school year of his life, fate has also decided Ben should be Andi's Dragon Guard, her bound mate with superpowers right out of comic books. And then an ancient evil bent on destroying the world kidnaps Ben's parents. Ben’s had better years. But evil necromancers and over-protective parents aside, Ben’s going to do everything he can, with or without the full powers of Dragon Guard, to do the right thing, not just for Andi, but for the world. 

And still get his math homework done on time.

Description for Ghost Betweens

The spooky farm in the middle of suburban Citrus Valley has long been rumored to be haunted. After taking pictures in the abandoned fields, Josh Hart and his buddy, Zach, find the stories to be true. They want to learn more, and are joined in their quest by Zach's girlfriend, Kendra, and the new girl in school, Whisper Douglas. Josh and Whisper find they're not only drawn to each other, but they also have superpowers when it comes to the supernatural. Their history teacher proves to have an unusual knowledge of their powers, and guides them to better utilize their newfound talents. And they need all the help they can get when Zach and Kendra are possessed by a powerful demon at the farm, who plans to use the teens to escape her prison and take over the world. Now Josh and Whisper, the newest Ghost Betweens, not only need to save their friends, but the entire planet, as well.

Novel Descriptions

I've been picking up quite a few free books on Amazon for the Kindle lately, and my method has taught me something that should help me in my own writing career. And it could help you, as well. I'm talking about the description of the novel. This is basically all the readers have to go on when deciding whether to read your book or not. Yes, covers do sell books, as well, but in my view, a good description is a much bigger selling point.

I've found that if a description is too long or too short, I'm probably not going to go with the book. Yes, there are exceptions, of course, but these are few and far between. The sweet spot for me seems to be a single paragraph of about five or six sentences. Think about a cover blurb on the back of mass market paperback books (remember those?). There's not much room on there, so each sentence, each word, has to carry weight. Back cover blurbs are not overwritten; they get to the heart of the story and tell exactly why you should read that book. Even though Amazon lets authors create much longer descriptions, the best keep theirs short.

Your novel took many months, sometimes years, to complete, so don't sabotage it by not taking the time to craft an impressive description. Spend time crafting every word; don't just dash off a quick intro to the book and be done with it. You want to sell the thing, be it for money or for the advertisement of free so you get good word of mouth. Make it easy and worth their time, and readers will download your book. I know I'm going to follow this advice for my next venture into ebook marketing, and you might want to give it a try, as well. After all, I came up with this with my reader-hat on, not my writer-hat.
